Though his Berkshire Hathway still owns Omaha-based Sun Newspapers and the Buffalo News, the world’s top money manager views the future of the newspaper industry dismally, says the journal. ‘For most newspapers in the United States, we would not buy them at any price,” the world’s second richest man was quoted as saying. ‘They (newspapers) have the possibility of going to just unending losses,” said Buffet, who has long considered himself to be a newspaper man.

As long as newspapers were essential to readers, the journal quoted him as saying, they were essential to advertisers. But now news is available in many other venues.Referring to the Washington Post Company in which Berkshire has a significant investment, Buffet said ‘the company has a solid cable business, a good reason to hold on to it, but its newspaper business is in trouble,” according to the journal.

Manmohan Singh stressed that there is enormous scope for American investments in the development of key infrastructure, including road, rail, airports and ports.

“We see enormous opportunities. All fields are open for economic participation,” he said.

“No investor is more welcome in India than investors from this great country,” Manmohan Singh said in response to a question from David Cote, CEO of Honeywell and the co-chair of the India-US CEOs Forum.

Ignore the Canadian media’s portrayal of India as orientalist exotica and the epicentre of some of the world’s worst problems.

India is also an economic and geopolitical giant, in some respects more important than China. Besides democracy and English, it boasts a population that’s much younger than China’s.

Its $1 trillion economy equals Canada’s, and is growing at 6.7 per cent this year, compared with the stagnant economies of the West. India is spending as much

With a staff of over 10,000 under him (including 2,200 federal scientists), and a budget in excess of $2.6 billion, Dr. Shah
is tasked with leading the agency’s participation in President Barack Obama’s global food security initiative.

Prior to his appointment as Under Secretary, Dr. Shah worked for the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation in a variety of roles, including Director of Agricultural Development, which over saw the foundation’s multi-billion dollar
portfolio for grant and program related investments which looked to transform small scale farming around the world and over come hunger and poverty. He also managed the Foundation’s $1.5 billion commitment to the Vaccine Fund, an effort that Bill and Melinda Gates called ‘their best investment’.

Affairs Minister S. M. Krishna during his visit to New York to attend the UN General Assembly. Minister Krishna, while serving as Governor of Maharahtra, had inaugurated GOPIO Convention in January 2005 in Mumbai.Minister Krishna was briefed on GOPIO’s 20th Anniversary Convention and was presented the souvenir brochure brought out at the convention.

Anand Sharma, India’s Minister for Commerce and Industry, has been briefed about issues affecting the Indian Diaspora arising from the recent 20th annual conference in New York by Lord Diljit Rana, recently elected GOPIO President.

Lord Rana met Mr Sharma in London recently for talks during the minister’s visit to the UK. Among the issues discussed were the contribution NRIs/PIOs currently make to the Indian economy and the opportunities that exist for the Indian government to develop this important and longstanding relationship. Lord Rana, a leading UK hotelier and property developer, told the minister that GOPIO was keen to strengthen further its relationship with the Indian government particularly in areas such as economic development and educational provision. “Indiancommunities throughout the world would welcome closer interaction with the government in Delhi in areas such as human rights and property rights,” Lord Rana said.

My first Saturday job was working at my father’s steel mill in Calcutta. Actually, it wasn’t only a Saturday job. I was working there every day while also studying for my degree at St Xavier’s College in economics and finance.

University classes started at 6am and lasted until 10am. Then I would go and do a full day’s work at the office.I started off in the postroom. Myfather, who has always been my mentor, quite rightly insisted I start at the bottom and it was only as I showed my value that I was given more responsibility.I learnt at relatively young age that I had a genuine passion for the steel industry and that I would have to work hard to make progress. I still feel like that today.

It started from the sacrifice ofSonia Gandhi of not accepting the Prime Minister post after 2004 Congress victoryand putting Mr clean Dr Manmohan Singh instead that led to situation whereCongress party have secured faith ofthe majority of people in the country. LaterRahul Gandhi was strategically pushed to corner the urban appeal of the BJP by targetingthe urban youth. After securing unexpectedvictory in the recent lok Sabhaelections, the 3-0 sweep of assembly polls marks a Congress ascendancy whichthreatens to revive the pre-Emergency unipolar politics where the canvas was toosmall to accommodate an opposition party.

The Congress victories in Maharashtra,Haryana and Arunachal Pradesh only confirmthe trend left behind by the LokSabha triumph where the gap between the winner and the loser was that between thesprinters breasting the tape first and fourth.JOY OF VICTORY: JUBILANT CONGRESS WORKERS3 cheers for CongCongress score hat trick, brilliant electoralmanagement is the key..It could be a march, in the short-term, towards one-partypolitics.

Nobody would have comprehended in the last financial year that the best performing economies will be struggling for breather; The speed with which clouds of economic gloom and even despair have gathered over the global economy has been startling everywhere. But the change has been especially sudden in the world’s two most populous countries: China and India.

Until quite recently, the world’s fastestgrowing big economies both felt themselves largely immune from the contagion afflicting the rich world. Optimists even hoped that these huge emerging markets might provide the engines that could pull the world out of recession.

Now some fear the reverse: that the global downturn is going to drag China and India down with it, bringing massive unemployment to two countries that are, for all their success, still poor-India is home to some two-fifths of the world’s malnourished children.

The pessimism may be overdone. These are still the most dynamic parts of the world economy. But both countries face daunting economic and political difficulties. In India’s case, its newly positive self-image has suffered a double blow: from the economic buffeting, and from the bullets of the terrorists
who attacked Mumbai last month. As our special report makes clear.

India’s recent self-confidence had two roots. One was a sustained spurt in economic growth to a five-year annual average of 8.8%. The other was the concomitant rise in India’s global stature and influence. No longer, its
politicians gloated, was India “hyphenated” with Pakistan as one half of a potential nuclear maelstrom. Rather it had become part of “Chindia”-a fast-growing success story.

The Mumbai attacks, blamed on terrorist groups based in Pakistan and bringing calls for punitive military action, have revived fears of regional conflict. A hyphen has reappeared over India’s western border, just as the scale of the economic setback hitting India is becoming apparent. Exports in October fell by 12% compared with the same month last year; hundreds of small textile firms have gone out of business; even some of the stars of Indian manufacturing of recent years, in the automotive industry, have suspended production.

The central bank has revised its estimate of economic growth this year downwards, to 7.5-8%, which is still optimistic. Next year the rate may well fall to 5.5% or less, the lowest since 2002.
